Jump rings are basic components of  Tiffany jewellery design and construction, whether for simple purposes of attaching charms to necklaces and bracelets or for making elaborate chain mail (chain maille) earrings, necklaces and bracelets.

What is a jump ring?

Jump rings are loops formed of wire.  The two most common jump rings are:

• open, round-shaped and made of round wire with a single cut that lets the rings be opened and closed
• closed (soldered), round-shaped and made of round wire

Other jump rings shapes:

• oval
• teardrops
• diamonds
• triangular wire rings
• square wire rings
• twisted wire rings

Large and Fancy jump rings are more likely to be used as earring drops and other decorative components.

Quality open jump rings

Well-made open jump rings will have ends that are saw cut at 90 degrees to the "plane" of the rings.  The ends will "fit" together well without showing a big gap.  Inexpensive pieces are often "chisel-cut", meaning that both ends of the wire have a point.  Chisel-cut rings are often made of thinner wires that lack the strength for a well-made piece of jewelry.

Earwire Materials

Earwires are produced in precious and base metals juicy jewelry.  The materials most often used by the DIY jewelry community will include:

The plated earwires are most often made over Tiffany Earrings brass or surgical steel.  People with nickel allergies will want to avoid many gunmetal plates, which are defined as "black nickel".  U.S. and European-standard sterling silver will be nickel free.  Many people look for earwires which are both nickel free and lead free.

Earring Stops

Rather than risking the loss of one or both Tiffany & co earrings, earring stops are recommended.  For earwires, the stops are usually a white rubber cylinder with a center hole or clear plastic of a similar design.  Stops are inexpensive insurance for those who sell earrings or give them as gifts.

Tools Recommended for Assembling Earrings

Jewelry-grade chain nose pliers or flat nose pliers are recommended for assembling earrings using earwires.  (Wire wrapping the dangles or creating your own earwires will require additional tools.)  These pliers will be smooth on the inside to minimize any marks transferred to earwires or dangles.  An upgrade from normal jewelry pliers to nylon-jawed pliers will Tiffany Rings prevent accidental marking even more.
